Seasonal Hydrology & Safety

Devil's Pool is a natural rock basin situated on the edge of Livingstone Island, Zambia. Swimming is only safe when the water levels of the Zambezi are low enough to expose the natural basalt barrier.

  • Low Water Season (approx. Mid-August to January): Pool is typically OPEN. Swimmers can safely pose on the lip.
  • High Water Season (approx. February to July): Pool is strictly CLOSED due to dangerous flood torrents.
Livingstone Island History

This is the exact island where explorer David Livingstone stood in 1855, becoming the first European to set eyes on the falls, describing it as "scenes so lovely they must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight."

Safety-First Protocol

All excursions are accompanied by a professional safety swimmer. You will be guided exactly where to jump, swim, and sit. Lifejackets are provided for the river crossing.
