“Avoid packing the entire outdoor store. Our rangers break down exactly what you need (and what to leave behind) for a comfortable bush experience.
Packing for a safari can feel daunting, especially with light aircraft luggage limits (usually 15kg in soft duffel bags). Here is our simplified list of essentials from the people who live in the bush.
1. The Color Palette Matters
Leave bright colors and dark blue/black at home. Dark blue attracts tsetse flies, and bright white gets covered in red African dust immediately. Pack khaki, beige, olive green, and brown. Neutral tones help you blend into the environment and keep insects away.
2. Layering is Key
Morning game drives start at sunrise in open vehicles. It can be freezing cold (often 5°C in June/July). By 11:00 AM, the sun is blazing and it is 28°C. Pack a warm windbreaker/fleece, gloves, and a beanie, but wear a lightweight t-shirt underneath so you can strip off layers as the day heats up.
3. Essential Gear
- Binoculars (essential - do not rely on sharing the guide's set)
- A good camera with at least a 200mm zoom lens
- A wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap (it gets windy in open vehicles)
- High SPF sunscreen and insect repellent containing DEET
- A headlamp or small flashlight for walking around lodges at night
